Romance Scams are a specific type of extortion that uses catfishing tactics to lure unsuspecting victims on social media, dating applications, and messaging apps. While sometimes associated with sextortion, the term Romance Scam actually refers to a type of extortion where a cyber criminal creates a persona of an attractive individual, builds up fake romantic relationships with victims before extorting them for money in the form of gifts.
